A balanced oral flora is so important

A balanced oral flora strengthens the immune system and protects us from heart disease

How important the intestinal flora is for our health has been discussed for years. Hardly anyone talks about a balanced oral flora, which also protects us from illnesses. “There are several hundred million bacteria and a large variety of different species in our mouth,” says microbiologist Dr. Reinhard Hauss. Scientists have discovered more than 500 different species of bacteria in the human oral cavity that form the oral flora and strengthen the immune system. At the same time, it contains antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal molecules that kill harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. In this way, some substances in the mouth that are toxic to humans are neutralized. Saliva supplies the teeth with minerals and controls the biofilm on the teeth. Without saliva, tooth enamel would become pitted because saliva acts as a buffer for the acids in food. The teeth would “soften” and file down within a few weeks. The beneficial bacteria are also part of the digestive process.

Useful germs displace harmful bacteria

Inadequate oral hygiene, but also one that is high in sugar or highly acidic

Diet can disrupt the delicate balance of the oral flora. “In addition, antibiotic treatments and dental procedures have a negative impact on the balance,” explains the expert Dr. Hauss. With far-reaching consequences: In addition to bad breath, the risk of tooth decay and periodontitis increases. There can also be other areas of inflammation that endanger the health of the heart or lungs. What to do? “Current studies show that the natural oral germ Streptococcus salivarius M 18 has been proven to displace harmful bacteria,” explains Dr. Hauss. With lozenges that contain millions of this germ (e.g. PRObiom® Dental), we can bring the oral flora back into balance.

Which can also help

An Irish study has shown that coconut oil can protect teeth and promote healthy oral flora. And this is how it works: Before brushing your teeth, pull a tablespoon of coconut oil through the spaces between your teeth for five minutes, then spit it out.
